What is indexed in library databases

A database index allows a query to efficiently retrieve data from a database.   Indexes are related to specific tables and consist of one or more keys.   A table can have more than one index built from it.   The keys are a fancy term for the values we want to look up in the index. Creating an index on a field in a table creates another data structure which holds the field value, and a pointer to the record it relates to. This index structure is then sorted, allowing Binary Searches to be performed on it. Library Resources.
